How to Stay Safe in the Sun While on Holiday at Sudwala Lodge

South African summers are known for their long, golden days that are  perfect for exploring, swimming, hiking, and relaxing outdoors. At Sudwala Lodge, nestled in the breathtaking Mankelekele Mountain foothills and surrounded by lush forest, guests spend most of their holiday enjoying nature, the pool, the gardens, and the nearby Sudwala Caves. But with all that sunshine comes the need to take good care of your skin and overall well-being.

To help you make the most of your stay, here’s how to enjoy the outdoors while staying safe in the sun.

Apply Sunscreen Generously and Often

Sunscreen is your best defence against South Africa’s strong UV rays, especially in summer. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and apply it at least 20 minutes before heading outside. Remember to reapply every two hours,  or more frequently if you’re swimming, sweating, or hiking the scenic trails around Sudwala Lodge.

Don’t forget commonly missed spots: ears, neck, feet, shoulders and the back of your hands.

Seek Shade During Peak Sun Hours

Between 11am and 3pm, the sun is at its strongest. This is a great time to enjoy indoor activities, take a relaxing break in your chalet, visit the Sudwala Caves, or enjoy a leisurely lunch courtesy of Grotto’s Takeaway.

If you’re spending time at the pool, choose to lounge under an umbrella or leafy shaded area. Small choices like this make a big difference on a hot Lowveld day.

Hydration Is Key

Warm weather and outdoor activities mean your body loses water faster than you realise. Keep a bottle of water with you throughout the day and sip often, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

If you’re exploring the surrounding attractions, such as the Dinosaur Park or hiking the mountain trails, take extra water and consider electrolyte drinks to stay balanced and energised.

Dress for Sun Protection

Clothing is one of the simplest ways to shield yourself from the sun. Choose:

  • Lightweight, breathable long sleeves
  • A wide-brimmed hat
  • UV-protective swimwear for children
  • Sunglasses with UV protection

This is especially important for younger children, who are more sensitive to sun exposure while enjoying the playgrounds or splashing in the pool.

Plan Outdoor Activities Wisely

Sudwala’s natural surroundings invite exploration, from scenic walks to picnics and outdoor sports. Try to enjoy the more intense activities earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon when temperatures are milder.

Midday is perfect for cooling off, resting, or enjoying indoor family activities before heading back outside.

Listen to Your Body

Signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, headaches, nausea, and extreme thirst. If you feel any of these symptoms, step into the shade or indoors immediately, drink water, and take a break. The goal of your Sudwala Lodge holiday is relaxation, so allow yourself to slow down and enjoy the peaceful pace of nature.

Enjoy the Sunshine, Safely

Sudwala Lodge is surrounded by some of Mpumalanga’s most beautiful landscapes, making sunshine a big part of the holiday experience. With a few simple precautions, you can enjoy every moment outdoors safely and comfortably. So apply your sunscreen, grab your hat, stay hydrated, and soak up the beauty of nature the smart way.
